Observation Narrative
A medium-age, nearly pure baldcypress forest on a wide relict floodplain along the Chickahominy River. This plot is located at the back of the floodplain in a backswamp slough. Although the river was originally tidal in this portion (tidal fluctuations are now blocked by a dam), this habitat was probably not tidally influenced. Currently, it is rarely inundated by overland flow except perhaps in the most catastrophic floods; perched groundwater apparently floods the slough during the winter and early spring.
